Page titles and descriptions on Shopify
The lowest-stakes check we run, and still worth closing. When an assistant mentions your store, the title and description are frequently the words it repeats.
Across 2,954 Shopify storefronts we have scanned, 28% fall short on page metadata.
Where to edit them
On any product, collection or page, scroll to Search engine listing and click Edit. That sets the title and description for that item. For the store as a whole, Online Store → Preferences.
What the defaults get wrong
Shopify falls back to the product title alone, and to the opening stretch of the description for the summary. That produces two failures worth fixing by hand: titles that are the bare product name, with no indication of what the thing is or who sells it, and descriptions that begin mid-sentence because the description opened with a marketing flourish rather than a statement of fact.
Write the description as a plain sentence naming the product, the material or key spec, and who it is for. An assistant summarising your page has to work from something, and that sentence is the something.
